An elephant was born at the Jerusalem Zoo! The new baby, named "Gabi", was born on December 10, 2005. He is the son of "Tamar" and "Emmett", a bull living at Whipsnade Wild Animal Park in the United Kingdom. "Gabi" was named after Dr. Gabi Eshkar, the head veterinarian of the zoo who was killed in a road accident in 2004. Dr. Eshkar began the project of artificial insemination that resulted in the birth of the baby elephant. Gabi" was born after a long and arduous labor and was Tamar's first birth. "Tamar" is a 20 year old elephant and therefore it was considered a "high-risk" pregnancy and birth. The baby weighed 90 kilos at birth and according to the guidelines of normal behavior, he is nursing 15 liters of milk per day. He has gained approximately 20 kilos since his birth. Meanwhile, it is becoming very hard to weigh him - he runs around constantly and has no desire to be caught by anyone! From the time he was born, the elephant keepers have been amazed how rapid his development is. "Gabi" quickly learned all the tricks: how to slide in the mud, how to throw sand in the air, how to collect water in his trunk and how to act up when the other elephants are performing their daily routine. Things just aren't like they used to be. Mother "Tamar" watches over her young son very closely, protects him and keeps him from harm. She listens to every sound he makes, and runs to his side if he seems to need her. The mother and baby are integrating very well into the herd. The other females walk with him, and protect him just like in nature, where the wild females will surround the babies, led by one alpha female. The staff of the Elephant Department is continuing their regular work, with a difference; they now have a sweet little source of pride and amusement - "Gabi" the baby elephant. You can see Gabi in the elephant enclosure daily from the hours of 10:00 - 12:00, weather permitting. Updates: Additional updates on Gabi and Tamar will be forthcoming. |
